CAMPAIGNING in the South West Holderness by-election campaign was suspended over the weekend. This was done as a mark of respect following the announcement of the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. The suspension of campaigning activities was in line with the decision of the major national political parties.

Following tributes in Parliament today (Monday 12 April 2021), leafleting will recommence and there will be a full return to campaigning tomorrow (Tuesday 13 April).

There will be a further suspension of campaigning on Saturday 17 April; the day of the funeral.

The Campaign Trail:

Steve Gallant, the Labour Candidate has criticised his Conservative and Liberal Democrat rivals for not respecting the suspension of campaigning activities over the weekend. He said: “A Labour Party member had to challenge two Lib Dems who were out leafleting on Westlands (in Hedon) on Saturday. They claimed not to know that campaigning had been suspended. On Facebook two people, one of them a Thorngumbald Parish Councillor, say they have had Tory leaflets delivered on the same day. Would Mr Winter and Mr Grove care to apologise for this complete lack of respect for HRH Prince Philip and the Queen?”

Last week additional party leaflets submitted to HU12 Online were uploaded to the HU12 Online Candidates page for Steve Gallant and David Winter.

  1. Labours Candidate is factually incorrect. There was no agreement between the political parties to suspend campaigning. The Liberal Democrats took the decision to suspend the national campaign (Leader visits and interviews) but the decision on leafletting was left to local parties. Rather than getting in to fake outrage about leaflets, would he care to apologise for the Hull Labour Councillor who posted remarks about Prince Philip that were “smears”? I suspect the Queen and her family would be more upset by Philip being “smeared” by a Labour Councillor on the day he died, than of people delivering leaflets on the following days?
