DID YOU KNOW?… Painter’s Cottages in Souttergate are some of the oldest properties in Hedon.
The cottages dating from 1562 were left in the will of George Painter, a Priest at 
Holy Trinity Church in Hull, as almshouses to provide accommodation for (originally three) poor men or women of the town.
The original three cottages have been converted into two to provide more spacious accommodation.
Can any readers tell us anything else about these historic cottages?

The cottages are now managed by a Charitable Trust which has responsibility for selecting residents when vacancies arise, and for the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings. It is not difficult to appreciate that this is a substantial ongoing problem for buildings of such age but it is well worthwhile. The trustees are drawn from representatives of the Town Council and members of the community.
The gardens of these cottages used to be an air raid shelter for the school.

They originally had thatched roofs.
The cottages were left in an almost derelict condition through the late 70s and early 80s, as a teenager at this time my friends and i had a den on the top floor , there were little windows in the rear side of the roof which we climbed through, we had many a good time eating picnics washed down with lashings of ginger beer (lol) It was nice to see the cottages brought to life and used to benefit members of the community as they were intended .
