A CHRISTMAS LIGHTS EVENT in Hedon is now likely to take place.
Following its meeting last night Hedon Town Council has agreed to hold a Christmas Lights Event on Friday 26 November 2021, 5 pm – 8 pm. It will be a pared-down event from normal with efforts made to reduce crowding.
This will be achieved through having only food stalls down the main street appropriately spaced out between the Town Hall and Market Place. In Market Place itself, children’s rides, the stage area and the Christmas tree would be spaced out more to reduce those crowded pinch-point areas.
Above all, it’s expected that those with concerns about the virus will not attend, and those that do will take their own necessary precautions.
It’s possible that Santa may be attending the event but as an outdoor attraction. Some craft and charity stalls that would normally be down St. Augustine’s Gate might find accommodation in the Alexandra Hall.
At the moment, the biggest problem with hosting a Christmas Event from the Town Council’s point of view seems to be the lack of marshals for the event. An appeal circulated last week for new marshals has not yet yielded an adequate response.
Any event scheduled will of course be guided by Government regulations. These currently allow for the event to take place, but these could change.
The official notice from last night’s meeting reads:
The Council agrees to put on a Christmas Lights Event, subject to there being no change in the Covid regulations re outdoor events which would prohibit such an event, and the Council being able to get enough manpower to marshal the event, but that the event would be pared back with no stalls on St. Augustine’s Gate. The event would be planned to run from 5pm to 8pm.Working group recommendation agreed by Hedon Town Council.
