Hedon’s Revived Market

Hedon Town Councillor Steve Gallant gives an update on Hedon’s revived Wednesday Market.

“Hedon’s Wednesday Market was really struggling for the last year or so. The Council met with the Market Manager to discuss options to revitalize it and even gave the Manager a rent break to encourage some innovation and reduce his operating costs. But there was little evident change and then Covid-19 hit. This could have been the final nail in the coffin.

“Without a Market, footfall for all the town’s businesses could be reduced. So, despite lockdown, the Council has managed to advertise, interview and appoint a new Market Manager – Groupe Geraud UK. They operate a number of markets across the North. They are a very professional outfit with lots of experience and were able to get the new Market up and running as soon as Lockdown restrictions were lifted.

“The new Market has welcomed back some old traders and some new ones as well. It’s very well organized with uniform stalls and has got off to a good start given footfall is still fairly low on high streets everywhere.

“Geraud runs the market, not the Town Council, so, if you know of someone who would like a pitch, they can contact James Ormsby from Geraud on james.ormsby@groupegeraud.co.uk.

“I have heard one comment that the market rents have gone up to pay for the new parking places and flower planters. I can state that is categorically NOT correct. The parking and planters were paid for by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. And the Town Council does not charge traders rent, just a license for the manager who sets the rent.

“Let’s hope, that as more people are confident to go out and shop, we see more footfall into the town – especially on Market Day! Ultimately the success of the market depends on local people shopping locally and that will benefit the whole town’s businesses.”

Cllr Steve Gallant – Chair of Finance and General Purposes Committee.

    • Thanks Sue, Interesting idea. Changing the day would require some discussion with the Market Manager and traders (some of them are at other markets on other days). But I know Giraud are hoping to run additional themed markets a few times a year as well.
