NEW EXHIBITION at Hedon Museum (Wed 8 June – Wed 6 July 2016) as Museum Press Officer, Katy Miller, explains:
“Displays of toys, books, clothing, and prams…”
NO MATTER when in time you look, children love to play and the Victorian era was a vital time for children. Things previously only available to high society became more easily accessible to the less wealthy in the world, so more children were able to experience the joys of toys. At the same time, children were being used for cheap labour in workhouses and up chimneys.
Our next exhibition will have a little of both, but mostly fun and games, some of which parents may remember as the subject of the exhibition continues up to the 1970s.
Displays of toys, books, clothing, and prams – everything grown-ups of all ages need to be taken right back to their carefree childhoods! Equally, it will be a fun opportunity for children to see what their parents played with when they were little, and what amused their grandparents. They can also be amongst the first to try out our children’s corner downstairs, where they and their parents can touch every artefact and play to their heart’s content.
This is a great exhibition for all the family, so don’t miss out on a fun day out at Hedon Museum.
All children must be accompanied by an adult. Exhibition runs from Wednesday 8th June to Wednesday 6th July will now run until Saturday 16th July 2016.
Opening times are every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 to 4pm.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the length of this exhibition has been extended: 200 Years of Childhood will now run until Saturday 16th July 2016.

“Don’t miss this exhibition at the Museum which explores the world of children for over 200 years from the reign of Queen Victoria to our present Queen.
“In the exhibition you will meet Mrs. Jane Spice taking her son George Frederick to St. Augustine’s Church to be christened, the ‘skivvy’, Maggie Spencer taking her employer’s two children to a party, and the 1950’s mum, Sandra, taking her two daughters to the seaside.
“There’s lots more to see; vintage toys which will bring back memories to all, and Christmas Annuals dating back to the 19th century which visitors may read and enjoy.
“Also for small visitors, there’s a rocking horse, dolls to play with, and a table full of Lego for the older children.
“The Museum is an ideal place where Mums and Dads and Grandparents can enjoy a cup of tea, coffee, and biscuits, whilst keeping an eye on their little dears!”
