Magdalen Gate, Hedon – The Assembly Rooms

THESE photos have been sent in by Tony Porter – of Hedon History Walks fame! They show scenes from Magdalen Gate, Hedon. The first is a really classic picture of Hedon Assembly Rooms.

Assembly Rooms 1983 - Tony Porter“This oldest one,” says Tony “is from October 1983 just before they were knocked down. My Mum attended dances there in WWII. They were 1/6d, with tea and biscuits, such innocent days. The cloakrooms were downstairs and the dance was up a rickety staircase on the first floor. The music was provided by an Army quartet or quintet. Before being pulled down, it was used by a boys club as a boxing gym.”

Incidentally, Jim Uney mentions going to the Assembly Rooms in his comment on 1940’s Hedon (by Malc Ripley) and describes a slightly different scene in those days: “…sited to the rear of The Kings Public House, I recollect the dance floor was up a flight of stairs with a viewing balcony attached. It was not unknown for a fracas to break out, especially after 10 pm, when the pubs closed, with bodies coming down the stairs or through the balcony railings, rather distracting whilst one is doing The Military Two Step!”

But back to the photos, Tony continues: “The long shot of almost the same view was taken in the summer of 1995 and was a street party to celebrate 50 years after the end of WWII. Crikey, twenty years ago already!!”

“The third photo shows ‘our gang’ at the party. Right seated is our son Ashley, next is Joe (can’t remember their surname), next in glasses is our daughter Amy, then in the blue dress is Johanna Adams, next, standing is Daniella Adams, and then just the head is Vicky Ellerby.”

“It goes to show that HedFest is just relocating the local spirit that is always running latent below the surface until somebody/something activates it.”

Does anybody else have memories of the Assembly Rooms or of other street parties or galas in Hedon? We would love to hear your stories or see your photos. Send to or just leave comments below.

And don’t forget, Tony Porter’s next Hedon History Walks are on Sunday 21st February 2016. 10.30 am meet at Market Hill for the Town Tramp, and at 2:00 pm meet at Johnson’s Corner Car Park for the Haven Hike. £4 each walk. £2 Children.
