NEAL EVERINGHAM has a job which means he deals with lots of sad stories; he’s a part of a family firm of monumental masons in Hedon which makes memorials to mark the passing of loved ones. However, the passing of young people is particularly sad and Neal and his friends from the town, Matty Smith, Wayne Pickersgill and Paul Wild, are keen to do something to try to prevent the premature loss of young lives by supporting CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).
Tragically, locals Amy Black of Hedon and teenager Josh Fell of Hornsea lost their lives as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. These tragic events have moved Neal and the others to support CRY. The charity backs programmes to screen young people, including those involved in sports, for undiagnosed heart conditions, and offers support for those diagnosed and bereavement services for affected families.
Neal, Matty, Wayne and their friend are keen cyclists and members of the Hull Chain Gang cycling club, and have chosen to ride the Way of the Roses route linking Lancashire and Yorkshire over two days to raise money for CRY.
“The 178 mile journey will take us from Morcambe to Boroughbridge on day one Friday 24th July,” said Neal.
“And most of that stretch is hills!” chipped in Matty.
“Whilst the official route ends in Bridlington via York and Pocklington,” continued Neal “we’ll be taking an alternative route to Hornsea, and after being greeted there, it’s on to Hedon to complete the ride at the Haven Arms, Hedon on the Saturday. We hope to arrive between 6 and 7pm.
“We hope people will come and join us at the finish at the Haven. We will be greeted by the Hedon Mayor Neil Black.
“We’ve had a hog roast donated from a local farm and Mark, Alison and the team at the Haven will be cooking and serving it with the profits going towards CRY as well.”
