HedFest – volunteering opportunities!

Market Hill Jubilee 2012

THE programme for HedFest 2015 is still being worked upon by the organisers and the Hedon Blog is eagerly waiting for the ‘big reveal’ and announcement about its main contents; artists, acts, and entertainers, etc.

But the Hedon Festival is beginning to take shape with participating venues hosting entertainment from across teatime on Friday 14th August with activities and performances on Saturday 15th August.

Much work has already taken place to prepare for the Carnival procession which will be under the ‘Starters Orders’ of the Hedon Mayor on Saturday afternoon. Workshops to make and prepare Carnival Art (costumes, props and masks) for the procession are taking place and there are opportunities to organise more. And whilst marching bands and dancing groups are signing up for the party parade, more are still needed. Knitters are still being asked to help knit bunting ready to ‘Yarn Bomb’ Hedon during the festival and provide a colourful route for the parade. Contact Anita on 07936 281 585 for information.

Finally, we need HedFesters – Hedon festival volunteers. Those who volunteer for other festivals (and it’s the Beverley Folk Festival this weekend for example) will know the thrill and buzz gained from being part of such an occasion. By volunteering you gain a special insight into how such an event is put together, there’s a comradeship and community spirit that just can’t be replicated by doing anything else. And most other festivals offer perks and privileges to their volunteers in exchange for helping out – and HedFest will have some interesting benefits for those that volunteer.

So what kind of things might you be doing? You could be helping to set up the festival areas, perhaps selling wristbands, or helping give information to festival goers on where things are, such as venues and car parking. You might be helping out with stewarding or marshalling events. Litter picking is also a key activity, helping to keeping the festival area clean and attractive, and there is a big job cleaning up after the event. If you have special skills and experience you might take on more responsibility.

It’s expected that volunteers would work on a shift system which would give opportunities for breaks and a chance to soak up the festival atmosphere.

This is only a summary of what might be involved in being a HedFester. But if its whetted your appetite, then fire off an e-mail, saying you want to volunteer for HedFest, to the Hedon Town Council at: townclerk@hedon.gov.uk
