AS part of our coverage of the Hedon Town Council elections we have reproduced leaflets circulated by candidates and here include a statement from John Dennis specifically aimed at this town election.

My name is John Dennis, I’ve lived in Hedon since 1967, brought up my family here and have conducted my business here, employing many many local people over the past 30 odd years. I think I am becoming considered as a local man!

John Dennis - jubilantAs the present Mayor, and a long term councillor, plus for the past 4 years an East Riding Councillor, I like to think I am recognised widely for working hard for Hedon.

In 2011, at the previous election I promised to ‘protect, preserve and promote’ the interests of local residents and our community. I have kept that promise by consistently taking a leading role in defending our boundaries and improving residents’ living standards. Please consider the following:-

1) 2014 – LAND-GRAB REFERENDUM – ‘HANDS-OFF THE EAST RIDING’.
For four months last summer I led the ‘It’s a No-No’ campaign which encouraged over 51,000 East Riding residents from Hedon to Brough to vote against Hull’s invasion plans.
Result – A 75% turnout and a ‘no’ vote of 96.5%’ But Hull is still a threat to Hedon

2) 2014 -THORNGUMBALD TO HEDON FOOTPATH/CYCLEWAY.
After many meetings with senior ER officers and Graham Stuart our MP, my council colleague Mike Bryan and I convinced the ERYC to fund this vital £280,000 project.
Result – residents of Hedon and Thorngumbald can now enjoy a safe walk or cycle ride between the two communities

3) 2013 TO 2015 – 667th and 668th MAYOR OF HEDON.
In November 2013 the previous Mayor resigned. As Deputy I stepped up to the plate, was elected Mayor and took on this challenge. With the support of my wife, Jennifer, I sorted out the aftermath and succeeded in restoring confidence within the Council.
Result – Hedon Council is back on track – It’s business as usual !

4) 2012 MAGDALEN PARK DEMENTIA CARE HOME
In the face of opposition from other Hedon Town Council members I actively supported this project and spoke at the East Riding Planning Meeting in favour of this much-needed facility.
Result – An award-winning development came to Hedon, bringing with it many new jobs and specialist care facilities to our residents.

5) 2012 – INSURANCE BATTLE TAKEN TO DOWNING STREET!
As your Ward Member I steered a motion through the East Riding Council to urge the government to back the “Flood-Re” affordable insurance scheme. It was supported unanimously. Cllr. Mike Bryan and I took a massive petition to Number 10.
Result – Flood insurance is now available for Hedon residents in previously flooded areas at realistic cost

6) 2011 – DEFENDING OUR BOUNDARIES AND IDENTITY.
We were threatened with becoming part of the East Hull Parliamentary Constituency. I spoke at the major Public Inquiry at the City Hall, Hull
Result – Following the Inquiry the proposal was dropped.

7) 2005 to 2012 – HOTI CAMPAIGN.
As press officer for HOTI (Hull and East Riding Opposing the Incinerator), I, with other activists, consistently lobbied for the rejection of the 240,000 tonne mass burn waste incinerator planned for Saltend
Result – The entire incinerator project has been cancelled.

In addition to these major projects, I have been working constantly within the town too, solving many problems for local residents. I would like to continue that work.

I have been the Mayor three times now, this time under particularly difficult circumstances. In addition to carrying out all of the Mayor’s functions I, with the Mayoress have attended virtually every other Mayor’s civic events across the county. In addition I have been actively raising funds for my charity, Prostate Cancer UK. To date the amount raised is well over £3,000, which I believe is a record!
