A PROPOSAL to provide car parking spaces at a residential care home has come in for some criticism because it involves the removal of parts of “a historic wall” in Hedon’s Conservation Area.

The planning application submitted by Holyrood House hopes to create four vehicle parking spaces for the home, but constructing a new vehicle access entry and gate onto Magdalen Gate, would involve the removal of part of the large nine foot wall at the site. Neighbouring householder Stephen Wood claims the wall is part of the historic street scene of the area: “The wall has been here for over 150 years, rebuilt in the 1970’s to original specifications. It’s part of historic Hedon, an asset to the street scene.

“The East Riding Council seem to think that removing a wall in the Conservation Area is OK! I want to save the wall. If this goes, then what next? Why have the Conservation Area if it is not kept as is?”

Hedon Town Council has recommended that the application be refused by East Riding planners because of its location in the Conservation Area and the disruption it would cause to the street scene, they point out that the development is adjacent to the Kilnsea Cross ancient monument which is located in the grounds of Holyrood House.

However, the local town council’s main concern is that the new proposed vehicular access could create an extremely dangerous situation for pedestrians using the footpath on Magdalen Gate, with the wall preventing good line of sight for vehicles leaving the grounds. Hedon councillors have asked consideration be given to creating an access entry point on King’s Place rather than Magdalen Gate.

Information on the planning application is available at East Riding Council’s planning website (search for reference 14/03732/PLF when you enter the website).

  1. If mr wood would like to start some sort of petition against the proposed alteration to the wall, I would be glad to sign up!
