Hedon Mayor and Janet Thackray
Hedon Mayor Councillor John Dennis and professional artist Janet Thackray

AN EXHIBITION of paintings by Janet Thackray and her group of artists was formally opened by the Hedon Mayor Councillor John Dennis on Saturday morning 11th October 2014. Mr Mayor praised the work on display at the ‘Love of Watercolour’ exhibition at Hedon Museum and urged the public to come and support each of the talented artists.

The exhibition is literally brimming with paintings with every inch of space on the upstairs floor of Hedon Museum being utilised. Professional artist and experienced art tutor Janet Thackray was delighted with the layout of the exhibition and offered her thanks to Museum Exhibition Manager Julie Marshall for all her efforts in its arrangement. In particular Janet pointed out two paintings arranged next to each other; one was by her newest student Roy Sherrard displaying his first piece of work, the other by Audrey Johnson the longest-serving of Janet’s students who had been working at her art and displaying work for over 18 years.

Janet specialises in watercolour and her work is often inspired by the landscape of East Yorkshire, especially the Holderness and Humber coastal area. She has been sketching for over 50 years and has tutored extensively on art holding classes both for beginners and experienced students in her own studio in Patrington and in colleges, village halls and community buildings all over the north of England. She has even taught on cruise ships!

Currently her drawing and painting classes take place only in Patrington and Hedon, but attract students from across the whole of Holderness. She teaches small groups and offers individual tuition and welcomes absolute beginners. You can find out more about Janet’s art classes at the Exhibition or via her e-mail at millside.cottage@btinternet.com

This is the first time that Janet’s students have exhibited in Hedon Museum and it is definitely worth a visit – from viewing the work comes inspiration which whets the appetite to ‘have a go’ at drawing or painting yourself!

The exhibition is FREE admission. Open on Saturdays and Wednesdays from 10am – 4pm and runs until Wednesday 5th November 2014. Refreshments available.

  1. I’d just like to add, Ray, just what a pleasure it was to be asked, as the current President of the Museum, to open the exhibition on Saturday, and how impressed I and everyone I spoke to were with the quality of work on display. Janet Thackray is a very skilled artist, producing exceptional watercolours herself, and encouraging her students to follow suit.

Many congratulations to Janet, and to all other exhibitors, and of course to Julie Marshall and the museum team for all the work they have put into preparing the show, Another triumph Julie – Well done!

I thoroughly recommend everyone with an interest in art, to find time to visit this wonderful exhibition

    John P. Dennis.
    President of Hedon Museum Society
    668th. Mayor of Hedon
