SO what is going on here then?
The sound of a helicopter distracts Civic heads as they wait for the Civic Sunday Parade to pass by to give the formal salute to 668th Hedon Mayor Councillor John Dennis and his guests. Speculation from those watching from the street opposite was that a surprise Royal visitor might be dropping in from the aircraft – alas, it wasn’t to be! It was left to this year’s special civic guest Patrick Farnsworth, Deputy Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire to represent the interests of the Queen.
The Civic Sunday Parade on Sunday 28th September 2014 was led once again by the splendidly turned-out band and members of the Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force. The Cadet Force has rights granted by a special freedom scroll to march through the ancient borough of Hedon with flags flying and drums playing. Also marching were members of the British Legion, Women’s Institute, members of the Brownies and Guides, guests and Mayors from other towns and Hedon Town Councillors.

The Mayor’s Civic Sunday consisted of four formal component parts; a parade around the town centre to St Augustine’s Church, a service in the church, a shorter parade back to the Market Place where the official salute takes place, followed by the Mayor’s Civic party and guests attending a formal function in the Alexandra Hall.
But behind the scenes of the Civic Sunday is lots of organisation and effort from those who make it happen: Included in this list of unsung heroes are the Town Hall staff who organise the event months in advance including arranging the necessary road closures, the councillors who volunteer to set out and dismantle the function rooms at both the Town and Alexandra Halls, the marshals who police the road closures, the police who provide a safety escort for the parade, the cadets and St John Ambulance volunteers who provide a first-aid service.
But also a key part of the Civic Parade are residents from the town and those who visit to watch the spectacle. It’s one of the few occasions in the calendar when the public get to see the Hedon Mayor in his full mayoral robes, but with the added bonus of seeing a medley of mayors from other places and other distinguished civic guests too.
