IT WOULD have taken a leap of imagination at the beginning of June to visualise the sight of hundreds of thousands of people taking part in the #IceBucketChallenge!
The idea is crazy! Fill a bucket with water, add ice-cubes – and then throw it over your head! Madness!!?? And yet that is precisely what is going on in an unprecedented phenomenon that is sweeping the western world!
People are encouraged to take part in the challenge by their friends (or enemies?) who have already done it. Buoyed up with confidence by seeing others do it on YouTube and Facebook, you rope in your friends to film you or to pour the bucket over your head. You do it! You make strange noises and pull funny faces whilst reacting to the shock of the cold – and then, after drying off, you give, text or otherwise donate to charity.
Whilst Scientists are debating this as some form of mass-hysteria, there is no denying that charities and good causes are benefiting.
The MND Association report on their website that they have benefited to the tune of £4.5m pounds from #IceBucketChallenge! £3m of that is in Text message donations. Macmillan Cancer Support are likely to have raised similar amounts.
The #IceBucketChallenge was carried out at The Station, Hedon on Sunday 31st August 2014 in a challenge issued at the pub’s Fun Day last week.
Big Dan, Zoe from the bar, Billy, Andy and 8 year old Amy all did their bit to raise money for the pub’s ongoing support for Macmillan. Heroes of the #IceBucketChallenge all of them!
As a result of supporting pub collections for the fearless five, £74.45 has been raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Let the fun begin!…
