A Community weekend 2014!

A RANGE of community events take place over the weekend and we hope that Hedon Blog readers can join in with those events – and also help us record what takes place.

It certainly is going to be a real “Community Weekend” in South West Holderness!

The long weekend actually starts tonight (4th July 2014) with the opening of the Summer Exhibition at South Holderness Technology College, Station Road, Preston from 5pm – 7pm. If you have never been to an art exhibition before – this is the event that will inspire you to be an art lover! An all the work is created by our local kids at the college!

Paull Car Boot Sale cartoonSaturday morning (5th July) you need to get up early to be an early bird at the regular Paull Car Boot Sale. It’s open to the public at 9am on Paull Sportsfield (an hour earlier if you’re a seller). This undoubtedly is the most picturesque location for a car boot sale.

Scarecrow signFirst special event open Saturday 5th July is the 3rd Thorngumbald, Ryehill and Camerton Annual Gala and Scarecrow Trail with Scarecrows on display from 10am in the morning, until 4pm on Sunday 6th July. With a carnival Parade at noon, a Summer Show in the Village Hall – and a whole lot more fun and activities – there will be something to entertain most families taking part. Two celebrities are expected too – Val Woods the author and Michael Wood the award-winning Town Crier!

Eastside Gala Poster black writingThe Eastside Gala at Saltend starts at 11am on Saturday 5th July until 4pm. It continues a tradition of family-friendly fun-days being organised at the site over previous years. Battle of the Bands, Fairground Rides, Fancy Dress Rugby, Football Tournament, Barbecue and Beer Tent – lots on offer and a full day’s entertainment for £2 entry.

Chip pan firePreston Scarecrows are out now! It’s well worth a wander around the village to see how many you can spot! The competition for Best Scarecrow is going to be revealed at the Preston Fire Station’s Open Evening on Saturday 5th July from 4pm – 6pm. The event is a fun-day in itself with the added twist of extra special demonstrations being put on by the fire fighters – the evening will end with a Hog Roast for sale and live music into the night!

For those still in ‘holiday mode’ on Sunday 6th July, you can catch the Thorngumbald Scarecrows (perhaps those you didn’t see on the Saturday) displayed until 4pm. And in the morning at 10am at the St Mary’s Church, there will be a very special Scarecrow Service held.

Whilst the Hedon Blogger will be out all day on the 5th July recording the key events, it will be impossible to cover everything! So this is an appeal to readers – if you are out and about over the weekend and have stories to tell or photos to share, please do so at

On Monday and Tuesday next week it is hoped to report back on a great Community Weekend for the area!

PS: There’s also Cricket on at Middle Lane at 1:30pm, Saturday 5th July when the South Holderness First Team take on Beverley Thirds. Enjoy a bottle of beer from the Pavilion and just relax!

PPS: And don’t forget Hedon Museum has a fantastic Art Display on from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 5th July.
