FOLLOWING the low levels of complaints this year (we are now 36 days into the Pea Season) and no obvious public demand for a demonstration – the Protest is being POSTPONED.
POSTPONED means exactly that, the threat of a protest will remain as long as the threat of foul odours from the site invading our homes and gardens remains!

REQUESTS from local councillors have again been issued to report any smells from Yorkshire Water’s sewage works at Saltend (see Holderness Gazette 10th April 2014).
Speaking to the Gazette, Councillor Mike Bryan said: “It is absolutely vital that residents let either Yorkshire Water or Environmental Health know about any unpleasant odours from Saltend. Every report helps strengthen the case for further action to be taken.” The action he refers to, is to ensure that all possible measures are taken this year to prevent the problem of foul odours recurring.
Anyone who needs to report smells should do so at Yorkshire Water on 0845 1 24 24 24 or East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Environmental Health on 01482 396 301.
Hedon Blog call to action:
In 2011 at the peak of some of the worst smells ever experienced in the area, the Hedon Blog took a decision to launch a petition and a campaign against the public nuisance caused by the odours. While the scale of the problem has not been as bad as 2011, the communities surrounding the Saltend site continue to experience problems during the pea season – including last year.
Following repeated requests for more militant action against the foul odours – and with the threat of more smells, the Hedon Blog is calling for support for a demonstration at the gates of the Yorkshire Water Waste Water Treatment Works on the morning of Saturday 2nd August 2014.
The Hedon Blog is not issuing this call for action lightly – but just as in 2011 this website is best placed to coordinate any necessary action having exhausted petitions, phone calls and other complaints.
We ask local residents, community organisation, councillors and others to pledge their support. If you intend to attend the demonstration and protest – then please indicate this intent as a comment on the Blog, or on our Facebook Page.
We hope to very quickly gather pledges from over 200 people intending to take part.
The threat of more smells in the communities around Saltend, is being met by a threat of our own!

We hope – we truly hope – that Yorkshire Water’s promise of mitigation measures this year take place – and work! But until then our threat of protest remains! Organisational details to follow.

I’ve noticed this very familiar story from Mexborough in South Yorkshire, where the Yorkshire Water spokesman is quoted as saying that:
“We have a problem register which records complaints. The more complaints that are recorded, the more chance we may have of releasing funding. People need to ring in. We will have a look to see if there may be a possibility of funding for odour controls.”
In our case local councillors and Yorkshire Water are all bemoaning the fact that there are actually very few people who bother to ring up and complain about odours from the Saltend Waste Water Works – So on Saturday 2nd August 2014, those who can’t attend the demonstration, make sure you ring up Yorkshire Water on 0845 1 24 24 24 AND East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Environmental Health on 01482 396 176.
I also think we need an ‘Official Pong Tester’ possibly based in the Town Hall, who can stick their head out of the window and declare “It doth pong today!” and be the voice of Hedon and count for 100 phone calls to the above telephone numbers!
