WITH football and singing being topical at the moment with Peter Pawlett, Baby, then it’s an opportunity for Malc Ripley to sing the praises of Hedon County Primary School who were the Holderness Football Shield Winners on more than one occasion!
Malc has sent in this photo of 1950/51 winning team:
Back Row:– Harold Cox (Manager), Head Master S. T. Johnson, Coach, John Simpson (Huddersfield Town/York City full back).
Middle row:– Gerald Rookyard (Left wing), Frank Hardy (Right full back), Malc Ripley (Right half), Barrie Slaughter (Goal), Colin Smith ( Inside right), Bob Lee (Left Half), John Bryan (Left full back).
Front row:– Norman Hunter, (Centre forward), Ray Story (Reserve), Artie Saunders , (Captain and Centre half), Eric Lee (Outside right) and Bernard Brown (Inside left).
Malc points out that there was no 4-4-2 formation in those distant days!
Hedon defeated Leven, at Willerby 4 goals to 2 in the final.
Hedon County Primary School also won the Holderness Shield in the 1932-33 season.
Malc writes that the team squad members were:
- George Blacktop
- George Ward,
- Ken Warn,
- Arthur Foster,
- Will Barrow,
- George Hunter,
- Sid Scarah,
- John Simpson,
- George Ibbetson,
- John Heron,
- Walt Crane
- Arthur Charlton.
School Teachers being: – James Frear, Harold Cox, Sid Johnson (Head Master) and Ernie Wray.
Sadly, says Malc, no photo is available of this Shield-winning side!
BUT – we wonder – was a photograph taken, and if so, does anyone out there in Blogland have a copy to share?
Please do get in touch with any news of a photograph – or indeed with any memories or recollections of Hedon football in the 1930’s.
