Hedon folk from the 1930’s – Who do you know?

THIS PHOTO was sent in by Malc Ripley. It depicts those present at an Alison Hall Christmas Party. Malc believes it to have been taken circa 1929/30.

It was probably a little later, because the Alison Hall was not opened until 10th December 1931. The Hall was named in honour of Mrs Alison Todd the then President of the local Women’s Institute.

Malc says that there are many faces yet to name – he’s managed eight:

Not many names to faces, apart from at the back —

  1. is Mrs Sharpe (maiden name Barrett), the wife (of No 8) – Ald. Fred Sharpe, who had the Cycle/Sweet shop in St Augustine’s Gate.
  2. is W D Mendham, who founded the long running Iron & Engineering business in George St. which eventually ended up at Saltend, under son Walter & Grandson Ian.
  3. is Joseph E Tinkler, a Mayor of Hedon, in 1938/39 ( when there was 1,636 inhabitants in 1931 covering some 452 acres.
  4. is Gladys Robson, to become Ripley.
  5. is Elizabeth Robson, her mother, she lived in George Street, what was then No 34.
  6. is “Pa” Herbert Abblett, who eventually went onto marry the above widow.
  7. is Jack Taylor, a Plumber also lived in George Street. Father of cricketer David Taylor.
  8. Fred Sharpe, his brother Len was a driver and a Mayor of the ancient Borough!
