SOUTH HOLDERNESS CRICKET CLUB (SHCC) – Match Reports:

An Xl: Pride of place this time goes to veteran campaigner Steve Crane, who returned to the playing ranks with the Club, this summer, after some twenty-three years of retirement.

At Middle Lane last Saturday, Steve finally achieved his long-awaited ambition with his maiden century, with the Club, with exactly 100, (13 x 4, 2 x 6), before he had his stumps rearranged!

Many years ago, he ran himself out on 99 with the first team in the old defunct Pennant Alliance, but he made amends this time. Congratulations Steve, on your achievement, and on reaching exactly 400 runs for the season in addition!

His hard-hitting attractive effort enabled the Hedon based An Xl outfit to total a massive 252 for 3 in their 40 overs, with the centurion putting on 204 for the first wicket with Gary Chapman, with 8 fours in his good-looking 74. Paul Brooks made a rare appearance with his pleasing 33 not out, with Phil Allison adding 11, off a wilting Hessle III attack.

A startling feature of the visitors fielding side, being that they had five penalty runs added to the Holderness total during the home side’s innings!

Hessle could only respond with 112 for 7 in their 40 overs, to claim the worst part of the eventual Draw, as Chris Pashley (33) and Pat Noble (34), scored the bulk of their reply.

None of the other batsmen could really get to grips with keen bowling by Andy Berry, another who returned to the fold, as he finished with 3 for 9 in 11 tight overs, whilst Lee Darby had 2 for 14 at the opposite end, to cause endless problems.

Jane Brooks Law, of St Augustine’s Gate, Hedon, Sponsored the Match Ball.

SHCC An Xl 252 for 3, Drew with Hessle CC 112 for 7.

The first eleven crashed to another defeat, this time at the hands of divisional leaders, at the hosts Hill Top ground of Cottingham CC, despite the visitors doing well to put up 217 for 9 in their allotted 48 overs.

Skipper Rich Ingram took his seasonal aggregate to date to 617, with his good-looking 59, supported by left-hander Phil Hill doing well with also 59, Lewis Duell chipping in with 22, helped by Conn Brattan’s 20, despite good bowling from Rob Moy (3 for 34), and Dan Furlong with 3 for 35.

Byron Parker then took the Holderness attack to the cleaners with a blistering match-winning superb knock of 139 not out, supported by Danny Moss with his undefeated 55 also in good time, the winning total coming off just 37.2 overs, as the six Hedon teams bowlers used, suffered some stick with only Duell getting a wicket.

Cottingham CC 218 for 1, beat SHCC 217 for 9, by nine wickets.

This old photo (original size 2cm x 7cm) has been sent in by Malc Ripley. He believes it to have been taken in the 1920’s and shows a tent being used as a changing room in a field off Magdalen Lane, Hedon.

It shows 7 males and one female (at least it seems to be by looking at the hat). Persons unknown.
