Station Fireside Dec 2012

THE GLOWING FIRESIDE is the first thing that hits you when dining at The Station – it is the perfect antidote to the cold and the wet of the winter, especially when you’ve walked to the Pub on Hedon’s Souttergate.

We had booked earlier and gone for Christmas Dinner and our table was set up in a cosy corner table complete with Christmas Crackers to pull.

Starters: Normally I’d have gone for the filo pastry wrapped prawns drizzled with sweet chilli sauce, but being Christmas we swapped and I had what would have been Mrs Bloggy’s Vegetable soup. The advantage of this is I got to try a prawn as well – which was great! By special arrangement we got to try the Brussels pate starter as well. Not one for pate – or so I thought – I’d looked this up first on the internet and found that it’s also known as Le Pate De Bruxelles and is a national dish of Belgium (Brussels refers to the Belgium city – not sprouts). Mrs Bloggy referred to it as posh potted meat – but I’m a convert and would gladly order it as a starter in the future!

For the main meal. I’d opted for the traditional roast turkey with all the trimmings, while Mrs Bloggy went for the salmon with white wine sauce and prawns. Both meals were very satisfying; the turkey moist with enough gravy in the boat to brush or drown the meat depending on your preference. Mrs Bloggy – usually a difficult customer – described the salmon with prawns as ‘perfect’. The meals came with a large shared bowl of seasonal vegetables (including roasted parsnips – my favourite at Christmas time) – but quite frankly there were too many vegetables for just the two of us.

Despite already feeling full at this point, we persevered with the puddings we’d ordered which left us feeling completely stuffed! We needed the coffee just for something to concentrate on while we sat there feeling bloated, and it was a good half-an-hour before we felt we could get up and walk.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas meal at The Station and compliments are given to Pam in the kitchen – and also to Debbie behind the bar who kept us entertained and that beautiful fire stoked!
