UNDER PROPOSALS published today by the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) then the South West Holderness Ward (Hedon, Preston, Paull, etc) would be included in the Kingston Upon Hull East constituency for Parliamentary elections from 2015 (when the next General Election will be held).
The review of constituency boundaries has been carried out after Parliament decided that there should be a reduction in the number of constituencies across the UK, and that there should be similar numbers of electors in each constituency.
The number of constituencies in England is being reduced from 533 to 502 – a reduction from 54 to 50 in Yorkshire and the Humber. Each constituency must have an electorate that is no smaller than 72,810 and no larger than 80,473.
The BCE proposals for Yorkshire and the Humber reflect the fact that Hull has suffered a decrease in population:
“In order to increase the small electorates of all three constituencies in the City of Kingston upon Hull it has been necessary to make changes to the existing constituencies… We also propose that our Kingston upon Hull East constituency should include the South West Holderness ward of the District of East Riding of Yorkshire, from the existing Beverley and Holderness constituency.”
With an electorate of over 11,000 the South West Holderness Ward would be the largest in a 9-ward constituency which would also include the existing East Hull wards of Drypool, Holderness, Ings, Longhill, Marfleet, Southcoates East, Southcoates West and Sutton.
The initial consultation about these proposals closes on 5th December 2011.

I have some sympathy with the view that we don’t need so many M.P’s especially if the govt. is serious about devolving more power and decision making to local level. We do share some of Hull East’s problems such as WWTP stinks, proposed Waste Incinerator and no doubt there will be more. I have respect for the work Graham Stuart has done representing our area but we have had changes in the past and no doubt will in the future. My main concern is how much will the change cost us poor beleaguered tax payers?
What i think should concern us is firstly we would lose the services of our very highly committee MP, Graham Stuart, (presuming fairly safely that he would gain re-election next time round) as we would be extracted from his constituency.
Secondly, how could the MP for Hull East ever, in all seriousness be able to provide us with the sort of support we have come to expect, bearing in mind his or her massive responsibilities in serving the good people of East Hull. City suburbs, and country town and village communities are as different in every way as chalk and cheese, and I can only see a situation where our needs would be regarded as of secondary importance to those of the residents of East Hull.
