HEDON FOLK seem dis-interested in the idea of a town council election following the serving of an official notice last month.

"Are you bothered?" Catherine Tate catchphrase

Ten local people had to be found that wanted to hold an election to fill a town councillor vacancy. However, there was insufficient support.

So Hedon Town Council will appoint a new Town Councillor at its meeting on Thursday 24th June 2010. The council will co-opt their new member from those interested in serving.

If you would like to become a Hedon town councillor you should write giving brief details of your interest to the Town Clerk by 12:00 noon, Friday 18th June 2010.

For further details contact the Town Clerk at Hedon Town Council.

It is rather sad that there was not enough interest from those willing to put themselves forward as candidates for a Hedon election. It might imply that local people are not bothered, and are quite content and happy with the status quo. Is there is a lack of ambition for the town?

On the other hand those already active in Hedon’s vibrant community activities and groups might feel they simply don’t have the time to answer a call to civic duty. And perhaps there is a little cynicism that anything could really change through very local politics?

However, how ironic that the town is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the triumph of greater democracy in Hedon (see Blog post) at a time when there is a demonstrable lack of interest in that democracy.

What do you think?

  1. Didn’t even realize they wanted a councilor! I would be interested in the future but not at the moment as too busy as being a mature student.
