Withernsea Lighthouse: View from the lamproom!

Following an earlier post on Withernsea Lighthouse, the Duff’s finally made it to the small seaside resort to revisit the tower’s panoramic view from its lamproom. We had to earn our view though – 144 steps worth to the top!

There is a delightful museum at the base of the lighthouse which features historic information about the town, its maritime connections and also about Kay Kendall, the local Withernsea born celebrity come hollywood actress from the 1950s.

The photo looks out on the resort and the North Sea and features the town’s “Sandcastle” on the promenade. This was originally the entrance to the town’s pier which was swept away in a storm in 1880. Prior to this calamity the pier had already been damaged by ships crashing into it in the night. These disasters prompted the later building of the lighthouse between 1892 – 94.

To climb the lighthouse’s spiral staircase to the lamproom currently costs £2.50 (£2.00 for seniors) and £1.50 for children who will receive a simple certificate after completing the climb.
