Hedon Town Councillor John Ledger has been suspended from his position for one calendar month after the East Riding Council’s Standards Committee resolved that he had breached the ‘Code of Conduct’ for Councillors.
The matter related to a Town Council Property Committee Meeting in September last year at which Councillor Ledger failed to declare an interest in a planning application to erect posts on a footpath near his property.
The posts in question are ‘P’ shaped and allow walkers to proceed but deters bikes and horses. However, the footpath and posts in question were in close proximity to Councillor Ledger’s property.
The case may seem quite minor and perhaps can be put down to “not following procedure” correctly and should therefore not reflect badly on the Councillor’s otherwise hard work on behalf of his community.
However, it does serve to remind us that we quite rightly expect high standards from our elected officials – and it’s good to know that matters such as these are taken seriously and actively scrutinised by other council structures.
