TOWN COUNCIL BRIEF NOTES:

The following summary taken from notes made at the Town Council meetings in October has been sent in by Councillor Jim Lindop. They are based on discussions from the meeting and should not be taken as any official record. They are provided here for resident’s information and interest.
- Once again the refurbishment of the Town Hall Kitchen was discussed and we await quotes for the installation of a new central heating and hot water boiler.
- Members again discussed the Vivergo Tree Planting Scheme and resolved to discuss the matter further with the Arboriculturist.
- The Hearing Loop was discussed and a request is to be made for a demonstration of the equipment at a future meeting in the Town Hall.
- It was agreed that the Town Clerk draft regulations in regard to the provision of trees and seats within the cemetery grounds and that the current cemetery rules following consultation, be resubmitted for the next meeting.
- A Yorkshire Water representative said they are in the process of taking ownership of Westlands Lagoon, he added that contractors go twice a year to Inmans Lagoon to cut back undergrowth, but Yorkshire Water are supposed to check monthly that the systems are working correctly. He was informed that it appeared that no one had been into the enclosure for years. The Council were told that the issue would be investigated. Yorkshire Water is undertaking a major exercise (by using a hydraulic model) to check drainage within the whole area, including Hull. They will report back when this is completed.The representative was asked about the Greville Road pump, he confirmed that hard standing is proposed in the near corner of the playing field with 2 Bauer Couplings, so that pumps can be attached quickly, as yet funding is not available but this is being pursued. He added that the pumps would be stored at the Yorkshire Water facility at Salt End and that 2 new flap valves have been installed near Westwick.
- A plea was sent to all Shopkeepers and Business Property Owners within the Town Centre Conservation Area asking them to attend a meeting, to request their help to improve the appearance, special character and enhance the civic pride of this ancient and historic Town. Whilst the Council are ever mindful of the need to support and encourage commercial activity, it is believed that the appearance and cleanliness of some shop frontages is not harmonious with the character and ambiance we would like to project to the outside world. The council feel that signage should be on timber and hand painted in keeping with the Conservation area status. This was done in Pocklington and with cooperation between the Council and the shop keepers the appearance and atmosphere of the Town was improved, resulting in increasing numbers of visitors and in turn the takings and profits for businesses.
